Prevost's Squirrels
By Vickie Chao

1     The Prevost's squirrel is a very beautiful squirrel. Its back and tail are glossy black. Its belly and legs are chestnut-red. Along each side of its body, there is a gleaming white band running from its nose to the base of its tail. These contrasting colors make the Prevost's squirrel one of the most eye-catching squirrels in the world. Its nickname is the tri-colored squirrel.

2     The Prevost's squirrel lives in the forests of Southeast Asia. It weighs up to 18 ounces. It measures about 20 inches in length. Nearly half of that is its long, bushy tail. The Prevost's squirrel has many uses for its tail. When it runs or climbs a tree, it uses its tail as a balance. When it jumps from one tree to another, it uses it as a rudder. When it runs into a fellow Prevost's squirrel, it uses its tail as a flag to communicate. When it sleeps, it uses its tail as a blanket.
