Metric Pizza
By Brenda B. Covert

Tatika and Rayna went to the kitchen with their cousins, Barron and Josiah, to get a snack. Noisily they opened and shut the cabinets, the pantry, and the refrigerator, looking for something good to eat.

"Where does Aunt Jewel hide the good stuff?" Barron asked. The light from the refrigerator glowed as he peered inside.

Tatika turned around with an idea. "We could make a pizza," she said.

"Yum! Let's do that!" Josiah said, closing the cereal and oatmeal cabinet.

There was a large frozen pizza crust in the freezer and a bag of shredded cheese in the fridge. All they needed was pizza sauce and some toppings. They got out the cookbook and looked up the ingredients for pizza sauce.

Rayna read the list while Tatika checked the cabinets.

"We need tomato paste, water, olive oil, oregano, basil, salt, and sugar," she said.

"Here's the tomato paste," Tatika said. She set the can on the counter. "I'll look in the spice cabinet for the spices." She tapped her cousin on the shoulder. "Barron, look for the olive oil in the cabinet by the stove."

Rayna gathered the cooking utensils they needed. She found a small bowl, measuring cups, measuring spoons, and a big spoon for stirring. Josiah turned on the oven to 230 Celsius. Barron and Tatika gathered all the ingredients around the small bowl.

Josiah opened the can of tomato paste and dumped it into the bowl. Tatika was holding the cookbook.

"What do we add next?" Barron asked.

"We need 300 milliliters of water," Tatika said.

"How much?!" Barron and Josiah chorused.

"Are your ears blocked? I said 300 milliliters! Use the big measuring cup with the handle!"
