First Day Back
By Mary L. Bushong

Michael was dreading this day ever since the first day of summer vacation. It had hung like a black cloud on the horizon since the beginning of summer break. He had managed to ignore it for a while, but that was impossible to do now.

Just last week his mom had taken him shopping to get new clothes, books, notebooks, and paper. His collection of pencils were neatly sharpened and his assortment of pens ready to use. His brand new jeans were stiff, and his shirt and shoes shrieked of being new. Where had the summer gone?

Michael walked down the hallway with his backpack slung over one shoulder. He worked his way through the crowd of other kids to check the lists of names outside the door of each room in his grade. Finally, he found it on the third list. It was Mrs. Sweeting's room. She was new this year, and he didn't know anything about her. His mom told him he would like his new teacher, but Michael wasn't sure. There was only one thing he was looking forward to, seeing his best friend, Zack. He hadn't seen him since school ended last year, and he had missed him.

Michael walked into his classroom. His teacher was at the front of the room sorting some papers. Behind her, he saw she had written her name on the chalk board. He hoped her name was an indication of her personality.

Around the room, there were other children his age. Some were talking to friends, and some were emptying their backpacks into their desks. The desks were all arranged in rows. Finally, in the middle of one row sat the boy Michael had been looking for.

     "Zack!" Michael shouted.

Zack turned, and his face lit up as he recognized his friend.

"Hi Michael," he said, "Guess where you are going to be sitting?"
