1 Josh came to school today. He had a frown on his face. He was so sad.
2 "Hi Josh!" his friends yelled. "Come look!" His friends had something for him to see. His friends were happy.
3 Josh's friends took him to the back of his classroom. "What is it?" Josh asked.
4 Then Josh looked up. A small smile came to his face. There were five baby chicks in the back of the room. They were born from the eggs his class had been watching. They had just hatched.
5 All of Josh's friends were talking about the chicks. The chicks were funny.
6 Josh walked away. A tear ran down his face.
7 Miss Jones, Josh's teacher, came to him. "What's the matter?" his teacher asked. "Don't you like the chicks?"
8 "It's not that," Josh said. "I'm sad."
9 "Why?" Miss Jones asked.
