Vitamins & Minerals

1     Have you ever seen the broadcast of toppling dominoes? There on the ground, tens of thousands of dominoes are laid out in an elaborate design. With a gentle push, the first domino falls and knocks down the second domino, then the second domino falls and knocks down the third domino, and so forth. The entire chain effect happens so fast that we cannot shift our gaze. Then, suddenly, the whole event comes to an abrupt halt, because a domino piece is not lined up properly!

2     We can think of dominoes as vitamins and minerals and their chain effect as a complicated process of chemical reactions critical in maintaining good health. If a certain type of vitamins or minerals is absent, it breaks down the process and produces a devastating result.

3     Scientists categorize vitamins into two groups -- fat-soluble and water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. As the name suggests, fat-soluble vitamins dissolve in fats and require fats for absorption. Hence, we can obtain fat-soluble vitamins from foods that contain, what else, fats. If we have excess fat-soluble vitamins, we store them in our body fats.
