Asperger's Syndrome
By Jennifer Kenny

Kathleen met a girl in her middle school. Her name was Hillary. Kathleen was becoming more and more curious about Hillary each day. She was asked by her English teacher to be Hillary's study buddy. She told her teacher she wanted to think about it.

Kathleen went home. She spoke to her mother about the situation.

"What's the problem?" Kathleen's mother asked her.

"I'm not sure about Hillary," Kathleen said. "She's a puzzle to me. She seems so smart at times and yet a little odd at others. She does so well in math and science yet sometimes she takes things so word for word when the teacher gives directions."

"Does anyone else help her in school?" her mother asked.

"There's a special education teacher that keeps an eye on her," Kathleen said. "However, she is in all regular classes."

"Does she have a lot of friends?" Kathleen's mother asked.

"Not really," Kathleen said. "Sometimes kids tease her."

"That's not very nice," Kathleen's mother said.
