Second Chances, Part 1
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Jake swallowed as the side lift on the van moved into position so his wheelchair could be lowered to the ground. He checked his watch. It was 7:15 a.m. He'd purposely planned to get there early so few people would see him arrive.

Once the wheelchair was in place, Buster, his service dog, curled at his feet. The chair and dog lowered. Once on the level with the ground, Jake gave the command for Buster to step off and out of the way. They had practiced this many times, and they worked together smoothly as a team.

Dad came and stood next to him.

"Do you have everything you need?" he asked.

Jake nodded. "It's all in my backpack on the back of the chair."

"That's good. Are you going to be all right?"

"I think so. I've got to start again sometime," said Jake. "Can you come for me about 4:00? I want to talk to some of my teachers after school."

"No problem," said Dad with a smile. "I'll see you at four."

Jake watched as the lift was raised and the doors were closed. Then he waved as the van drove away.
