Second Chances, Part 2
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Jake was finally back in school after an accident left him wheelchair bound. It was still only first hour, and he'd already been called to the principal's office.

The wide glass door to the office was propped open. The secretaries looked up with smiles. One waved them back to Mr. Harmon's office.

"He's waiting for you," she said.

Jake nodded and rolled toward the other office.

"Mr. Harmon?" he asked as he stopped at the open door.

"Jake!" Mr. Harmon greeted him with a wide smile. "Welcome back to school. Sorry to pull you out of class, but I wondered if you could help me with something."

"I'll try, sir," said Jake hesitantly. Relief that it was nothing serious flooded through him.

"I know that having a dog at school is a novelty for many of your classmates. I thought that we would have a special assembly before lunch so we could explain what Buster does and how they should act around him. I also wondered if you would be willing to tell us a little about him as well. I know this is short notice, so don't feel like you have to."

Jake's first impulse was to refuse. To be on the stage in the gymnasium would be like putting himself on display. He looked down at his dog, and Buster looked up at him lovingly. Jake couldn't help but smile as he ran his hand over the dog's head and neck. Buster's story needed to be told.
