Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Part 2
By Toni Lee Robinson

1     It was a red letter week for Robert. First he had gotten an offer from Brown, his school of choice. A few days later, a strange man in a black car had pulled up outside the house. Stitched on the pocket of his dark blue suit was "New York Mets."

2     "I'm Wes Jones," the man had said. "I work for the Mets. We like what we see in you," he'd said to Robert. Robert had followed the man's lips carefully. Mr. Jones didn't seem to mind. He had offered Robert a contract. "You'll start out with one of our farm clubs," he said. "When you get some time in, we'll bump you up to the main event."

3     Robert looked at his parents. This was a new wrinkle. He'd pictured all this happening after college. Then he'd figured on going straight to the majors. But maybe this was just as good. He signed to his father. "The Mets' minor league could be my college."

4     His father hesitated. "I think we should talk about it," Edmond said to Mr. Jones. "He's got an offer from Brown University. Four years full ride, playing basketball."

5     "That's quite an offer," said the Mets rep. "I can see you'd need to think about it. I'll leave the papers with you. Look them over. Give me a call." He smiled and grasped Robert's hand. "Sure looking forward to seeing you play with us," he said.
