Social Workers
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Amelia's brother had an alcohol problem. He needed help. He entered a treatment facility with the assistance of a social worker. This individual made sure the family understood what was going on as well.

2     Austin was a ninety-five year old man. His family was experiencing great difficulty caring for his physical, emotional, and mental needs. They decided to seek help in a nursing home. The social worker at the facility helped him get settled, helped him with his needs, and worked with the family to adjust as well.

3     Cara was a sixty-five year old woman with very little money. She became very seriously ill and was unable to pay for the necessary treatment for her illness. The social worker at the hospital met with her, discussed options, and helped her find appropriate medical and financial services.

4     So what is a social worker? What kinds of qualities would a social worker possess? What kind of education does a social worker need?

5     Social workers are advocates for the whole person. They help patients and families identify and cope with illnesses and disabilities in a variety of settings. They help plan and arrange for appropriate care. They educate patients and families on care, treatments, and resources. They help solve insurance, financial, and housing issues. They may help with the admission or discharge of a patient to a program, hospital, or long-term care facility. They may help staff deal with a patient or a patient's family and friends.
