School Nurses
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Mrs. O' Hara is a school nurse. She works at an elementary school with seven hundred fifty children. She has done this job for thirty years and things have certainly changed in her office.

2     Years ago Mrs. O'Hara checked children's eyes and ears to make sure they could see and hear clearly. She put lots of band-aids on scraped knees. She took care of students with stomachaches and fevers. Today, though, her job is a lot more complicated. Why? Things have changed in general for families and also with the kinds of medical conditions students face.

3     School nurses are specialized nurses. They provide health care in a unique way. You may see nurses in hospitals, doctors' offices, and clinics, but school nurses have quite the special setting!
