Caroline was experiencing severe joint pain and swelling. It went beyond what her regular physician could treat. Who was she referred to that eventually diagnosed her with rheumatoid arthritis? She saw a rheumatologist.

Marlene was diagnosed with spondylitis. Because this disease can change over time, she needed someone special to monitor her condition. Who managed her care? A rheumatologist did.

Frank was a ninety-year old man. He was experiencing pain and stiffness in his hips and knees as a result of wear and tear. Who was in charge of his treatment? A rheumatologist was.

Rheumatology is a specialized field which deals with many different disorders associated with inflammation or degeneration of connective tissue. The field's name comes from the Greek word rheuma, which means inflamed.

A rheumatologist is a doctor who has completed a great deal of education and training in this specialty. First, he must go to college for four years and earn a bachelor's degree. Then he completes four to six years of medical school to earn a medical degree. Then he trains for three years to become an internal medicine doctor or pediatrician. Next he works in a rheumatology fellowship program. Finally, to become board certified, he must pass a rigorous exam. Most rheumatologists are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both fields - internal medicine and rheumatology.
