Neurologists
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Do you have any interest in the medical field? Would you like to specialize in a particular kind of medicine? Perhaps a career as a neurologist would interest you.

2     A neurologist is a doctor who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the nervous system. Do you remember what the nervous system consists of? It includes the brain, brain stem, spinal cord, and cerebellum. The neurologist is also concerned with the peripheral and cranial nerves. While the neurologist is extremely educated in conditions of the nervous system, he does not perform surgery. That is the job of a neurosurgeon.

3     An individual who wants to be a neurologist needs to study hard early on. He needs to go to college and do well. He needs to complete his bachelor's degree and go to medical school. Then he must complete medical school, and perform a one year internship followed by a three year residency in neurology. After residency, he may do a fellowship to become an expert in the area of stroke, dementia, or movement disorders. A neurologist can also work hard and pass rigorous exams in order to become board certified.

4     What conditions do neurologists treat? Neurologists help patients with a wide range of conditions. They include epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and Lou Gehrig's disease. They also include migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, stroke, Bell's palsy, and back pain. Sometimes they treat patients with tumors, sleep disorders, or infections such as encephalitis.
