The Great American Smokeout
By Jennifer Kenny

1     The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout every year. It is always on the third Tuesday of November. The idea is that if a smoker can quit for one day, he can quit forever. More people decide to stop smoking on this day than on any other day of the year.

2     Forty-seven million grownups smoke in the United States. Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease. There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco. Forty-three of these cause cancer. Nicotine is the one that makes people crave a cigarette. Smoking causes your teeth to turn yellow or brown. It makes your face wrinkle earlier than it should. It makes your body have to work harder. Smoking hurts others, too, because of secondhand smoke.
