Why Does Moving Make Jane Sick?
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Jane's family was going on a big trip. They were meeting up with many family members for a family reunion. Jane was so excited about the vacation, except for one major hurdle. Jane suffered from motion sickness.

2     What is motion sickness? It is being sick to your stomach when riding in a car, moving on a train, flying in an airplane, or traveling by boat. In order to get to her family reunion cruise, Jane would need to drive a long distance to the airport, fly by plane to Florida, and stay on the ship for the seven day cruise. Uh-oh!

3     Why does Jane experience motion sickness? Well, the brain gets messages from certain parts of the body to figure out if the body is moving and what position the body is in - inner ears, eyes, skin receptors, muscles, and joint sensory receptors. If, to the brain, these pieces don't match, a person can experience motion sickness.
