Licensed Practical Nurses
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Do you know what LPN stands for? It stands for licensed practical nurse. Now you may think a nurse is a nurse. However, the level of education and training varies; thus, there are differences in titles.

2     A licensed practical nurse must complete high school followed by an LPN course that takes around 12 to 18 months. The course may be found at vocational schools, colleges, or universities. LPNs also need to pass the NCLEX-PN exam to obtain a license and work. The training includes study in anatomy, physiology, basic nursing, drug administration, first aid, and nutrition. They may specialize in pediatrics, obstetrics, or geriatrics. Coursework also includes clinical practice in a hospital or similar health care setting.

3     LPNs need to be caring and sympathetic as well as emotionally stable in order to deal with their patients' needs. They must be observant and possess communication skills. They should be capable of making good decisions. They need to work with others as part of a team.
