Secondhand Smoke

1     Antismoking education from the last forty years has taught our nation about the risks of smoking. We know that cigarette smoking causes ninety percent of lung cancer. It causes mouth cancers and cancers of the larynx too. Emphysema and heart disease are commonly found in heavy smokers as well. Four hundred forty-two thousand people in the United States die each year from illnesses caused by cigarette smoking. The American Cancer Society says smoking is the most preventable cause of death today!

2     The thing about smoking is it seems that the smoker has a choice in the matter. However, what about those who don't smoke and yet are affected by smoking? Secondhand smoke is becoming a serious issue in this country.

3     Secondhand smoke is the smoke that a nonsmoker breathes in from another who is smoking. Scientists know smoking causes health problems in nonsmokers that we weren't aware of many years ago. About 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of lung cancer each year as a result of breathing secondhand smoke. Smoking also causes 35,000 deaths a year from heart disease among nonsmokers. It aggravates asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis in nonsmokers. Secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke, causes eye irritation, headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
