Bruxism
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Do you grind your teeth when you sleep? Do you even know? A family member may be able to answer the question for you since he or she might hear the noises you are making when you are sound asleep.

2     Do you know what the medical term for teeth grinding or jaw clenching is? It is known as bruxism. That term comes from the Greek word, brychein, meaning gnashing the teeth. Around three out of ten kids do this while they sleep.

3     People, including children, often realize they grind their teeth or clench their jaw when several things happen. First of all, others at home might complain about the sound. Second of all, they might wake up with a sore jaw or face. They might also suck their thumbs, bite their nails, or chew on things like pencils or the inside of their cheeks.
