Blood Vessels
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Our circulatory system includes blood vessels, or a system of tubes, in our bodies. Did you know that if these blood vessels were stretched out end-to-end, they would reach over 60,000 miles and could go around the earth more than twice? These blood vessels make up a huge branching network in our bodies.

2     Simply put, there are three kinds of blood vessels. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Veins carry blood toward the heart. Capillaries are connecting blood vessels. At any time in our body, about 3/4 of our blood is in our veins, 1/5 is in our arteries, and 1/20 is in our capillaries.

3     Blood is the main transport fluid in our body. Today scientists know that the blood moves through our blood vessels in one direction. It moves from arteries to capillaries to veins.
