The Ribs
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Your heart and lungs are your life-support system. Therefore, they require some special protection. The ribs, a bony framework, offer that protection. The ribs also protect part of the kidneys, liver, spleen, and stomach.

2     The ribs form a cage of separate bones. There are spaces between them. The chest cavity has to move so you can breathe. Therefore, it can't be made of solid bone like the skull.

3     There are twenty-four ribs. They come in pairs with one on each side. Therefore it is easy to calculate that there are twelve pairs of ribs. Each rib is attached in the back to the spine.
