The Integumentary System
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Do you know what the largest organ in your body is? Did you guess your skin? If you did, you are right. Skin is part of the integumentary system, or the system that covers. The system also includes your hair and nails.

2     Your skin is important for many reasons. It keeps moisture in your body, but keeps foreign particles out. It allows you to feel what's around you through the nerve endings located there. It helps to regulate your body's temperature when you sweat. It gets rid of certain wastes when you sweat.

3     What determines the color of your skin? Melanin does. Melanin is a darkening chemical. The amount of melanin can be different in each person, thereby causing variety in the color of skin.
