The Choice (part 2)
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Deena picked up her backpack. It felt light for a change. Jess would be waiting at the bus stop. It seemed like they had been friends forever.

Maybe she could go to school by herself for a change. She could run now far faster than the bus could drive! She'd skip riding the bus and see Jess at school later.

Deena was standing by her locker when Jess stopped by.

"I missed you at the bus stop today, Deena," said Jess as she took a long look at her friend. "You look really nice today."

"Thanks. I decided not to wait for the bus today."

     "You seem different," added Jess.

"That is because I am different," said Deena, as she closed her locker. "Today people will notice me. They will see that I am not average."

"I'm just average," said Jess softly as Deena turned away. "What's wrong with being average?"

The "improved" Deena ignored her friend's comments and the implied slight. The real Deena did not. She felt a lump form in her throat for a moment, until she was distracted.
