1     Cathy Freeman was born in 1973 in Mackay, Queensland, Australia. She is one of the Aboriginal people of Australia. The Aborigines are the native Australians, the first people who lived in Australia.
 
2     Cathy has said that two of her interests as she was growing up were running and issues related to the Aboriginal people.
 
3     Her grandfather had been a well-known rugby player, and athletics was important in her family. Cathy started running while she was in elementary school. One of her elementary school teachers entered her in a race on school sports day, and she has been running ever since.
 
4     In 1992, Cathy entered the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. She did not expect to win that year, but she thought it would be a good experience to prepare herself for future races.
