Hector Learns About Helpfulness on a Horse
By Beth A. Beutler

1     Hector stretched his tired muscles. It was hard to work on a ranch. His parents had a dream of finding gold in Nevada. They left their native Mexico six months ago. It had been a long, hard trip. As Hector sat back against a huge oak tree, he closed his eyes and remembered what it had been like.

4     "Hey you!" some boys yelled. "What are you doing here? You don't belong with us!"

5     Some of the American settlers were teasing Hector. Only a few days before, Hector's family had joined a wagon train. Hector looked different with his dark skin and hair, and his voice had a Spanish flavor to it. The boys his age were actually a little afraid of him. Well, not Johnny.

6     "Don't let them bother you," Johnny had said. Johnny walked with Hector as he was being teased. "They just are scared."

7     "Why aren't you?" Hector asked.

8     "Everyone is a little different from everyone else. Why be scared before you have to be?"
