Walter Learns about Work on a Walk
By Beth A. Beutler

"We have to walk to school?" Walter exclaimed, standing outside in the warm sunshine. "But that's way too far! I can't do that!"

Walter's older brother, Chad, laughed. "We are such wimps these days," he said.

"What do you mean?" asked Walter.

"I've been learning in history class what it was like to live in the past. Do you know that two thousand years ago people walked many miles a day?"

"That's because they did not have cars," Walter said with a smirk.

"True, but people who lived long ago were willing to work harder."

"I work hard!" Walter retorted, adjusting his new school backpack.

"Yeah, right," Chad answered. "You don't even want to walk a mile to school with me."

"But I get tired," Walter moaned.

"Walter, I thought you wanted to join the soccer team."
