Walter Learns about Work on a Walk
By Beth A. Beutler

"We have to walk?" Walter exclaimed, standing outside in the still-warm sunshine. "But that's way too far! I can't do that!"

Walter's older brother, Chad, laughed. "We are such wimps these days," he said.

"What do you mean?" asked Walter.

"I've been learning in history class what it was like to live in the past. Do you know that two thousand years ago people walked many miles a day? Jesus Christ once walked over 40 miles in one day!"

"That's because he did not have a car," Walter said with a smirk.

"True, but they were also willing to work harder."

"I work hard!" Walter retorted, adjusting his new school backpack.

"Yeah, right," Wayne answered. "You don't even want to walk a mile to school with me."

"But I get tired," Walter moaned.

     Chad turned to his brother.

"Walter, I thought you wanted to join the soccer team."

     "I do."

"Don't you think you will have to work hard to make the team?"

     "Yes."
