The Terrorism of the PLO
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Terrorism is the use of violence to reach a goal. The victims are often innocent people and children. Terrorists use threats and violence to gain attention. They try to force people or governments to follow their orders. However, as strange as it may seem, groups who commit acts of terrorism don't like to call themselves terrorists. They often feel that theirs is a noble cause.

2     The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is one such group. This group claims to be dedicated to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. That sounds reasonable. However, by our definition, they are terrorists. They've been responsible for the deaths of many Israelis over the years by means of explosives and firearms. Among countless other vile offenses, they were responsible for the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games and for the Ma'alot Massacre in 1974 in which 21 teenage Jewish students were killed in a school. Several terrorism attempts failed, including the plan to attack beaches and hotels in Tel Aviv, Israel, where the squad of 17 PLO terrorists was captured by Israeli military forces before anyone was hurt.

3     The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was created by the Arab League in June 1964. The Arab League was made up of 22 Middle East countries including Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Libya, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. In 1969, Yasser Arafat became the leader of the PLO and remained in that position until his death in November 2004.
