Labor Day Kindness
By Jody Williams

1     Many people have picnics on Labor Day. Some people go camping. Some people rest at home. Over 1 million people help raise money. Muscular dystrophy is a disorder. Many people are born with it. People with MD have weak muscles. They can't walk. They have problems sitting up. Some people have problems breathing. Others can't move their arms or legs. Many people have to use wheelchairs.

2     There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. Doctors are learning how to help. They give tests to people who may have MD. More boys than girls have MD. Some people are born with it. Most kids have to use wheelchairs by the time they are 12 years old. Some have to use machines to help them breathe. Some use robots to help them do things during the day. People with MD have to do exercises. This helps their muscles get stronger.

3     On Labor Day there is a telethon. A telethon helps raise money. It is on TV. The Muscular Dystrophy Telethon lasts for over 21 hours. It raises money for research. People all over the world call in to give money to help. Many TV and movie stars perform. They ask people to call and help.
