Life with an African Grey Parrot
By Colleen Messina

1     Most people don't like it when people talk back to them. If you have a parrot, though, you'll love it! Parrots are sassy, unusual pets, and they can talk your ear off.

2     There are about 353 species of birds that can be called parrots. They all have a curved beak, an upright body, and four toes on each foot. Parrots come in many colors, which is one reason so many people love them. They like warm places, so they live in India, West Africa, Southeast Asia, as well as Central and South America. One highly intelligent, long-winded species that has become a popular pet is the African Grey Parrot.

3     An African Grey Parrot is a pretty bird. It is about the size of a pigeon with a solid black beak and a red tail. There are two kinds of grey parrots. One kind is light grey, while the other is a darker shade. Researchers think that African Grey Parrots have the mind of a 5-year-old child and the emotional development of a two year old. Maybe that is why they say mischievous things sometimes.
