Many Ways to Help Animals
By Colleen Messina

1     There are many ways to help animals. You can adopt a pet from the Humane Society, or you can sponsor a wild animal. Sometimes it takes a bit of detective work to find just the right thing to do, but helping animals always feels good.

2     Zorro's owner is happy that she helped him. His story is a good example of how a big dog finally ended up in the right place. Zorro was an enormous dog. He was part Great Dane, so he had a hard time finding a home. He lived in the Humane Society from the time he was 8 weeks old, but then one family adopted the lively, black puppy. They soon discovered that they didn't have time to exercise him. So, Zorro ended up back in the shelter. No one adopted the handsome dog.

3     Then, Megan, a volunteer at the Humane Society, tried working with Zorro. She loved his spirit and big heart. She had an idea for the dog whose tail swished faster than a windshield wiper. She worked with children at a summer camp and introduced them to Zorro. Everyone loved him so much that he won the Most Cooperative Dog award. Megan kept hoping that someone would adopt Zorro. She gave him baths and trained him well, but no one adopted the black bundle of energy.
