Locking the House
By Cathy Pearl

1     Patti was leaving the house with her mom. They were going to the doctor. Patti's mom asked her to lock the house before they left.

2     "Why do we lock the house?" Patti asked.

3     "We lock it to keep people we don't know from getting into the house," she said.

4     Patti looked confused. "Why would people we don't know want to get into our house? They don't live here."

5     Mom laughed. "They don't want to live in our house. They want to take the things in it. It is called stealing. We lock the house so they can't come in and get our stuff."
