Phil Uses the Phone Book By Joyce Furstenau

¹     Phil reached around in the bottom of his backpack. He stuck his head close to the opening so he could check it closer. There was no lunch money. Phil did not know what to do. Phil decided to ask to borrow some lunch money from his teacher, Mrs. Phipps.
 
²     "Mrs. Phipps, can I borrow $1.50 from you? I forgot my lunch money," asked Phil.
 
³     Mrs. Phipps smiled and looked at Phil. "We've got plenty of time before lunch. Perhaps we can call your grandmother and ask her to bring you some lunch money," she said.
 
⁴     Phil nodded his head, "No, Mrs. Phipps. I can't call my grandmother because I don't know her phone number."
 
⁵     Mrs. Phipps smiled again. "Oh, my! How can we find her number?" she asked Phil.
 
⁶     Phil looked at his teacher. "In the phone book?" he asked.
 
⁷     "Yes, Phil, in the phone book. I will help you. Can you find the phone book in our room?" asked Mrs. Phipps.
 
⁸     "Yes, it's right beside the phone.[use a comma instead of the period]" he answered.
 
⁹     "Great! Let's start with your grandma's name. Can you write it down for me?" she asked Phil.
 
¹⁰     "Yes," answered Phil. "Her name is Grandma Betty." He wrote B-E-T-T-Y.
 
¹¹     "I need to know her last name too, Phil," said Mrs. Phipps.
