Jake and Jackie Take Care of a Pet

1     Jackie was very excited. Her friend Jenny was going away during school break. She needed someone to take care of her dog. Jackie did not have a dog of her own, and her parents had decided to let the friend's dog stay with them for a week.
 
2     "I can hardly wait until Princess gets here," Jackie told Jake as they hung out on Jackie's front porch.
 
3     "You've never had a dog, have you?" Jake asked.
 
4     "No. I'm hoping after Princess is here, Mom and Dad will let me have one."
 
5     Jake smiled. Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't. Jackie's family was pretty busy, and Jake knew that pets took a lot of time and effort. Jake used to have a cat and a dog, but they had both gotten very old and died in the same year, when Jake was ten. His parents decided not to get any more pets for awhile after that.
 
6     Two days later, Jackie's friend dropped off Princess, a small white terrier, while Jake was visiting. She also brought a whole box of items.
 
7     "What's all that stuff?" Jackie asked.
 
8     Jenny explained. "I have Princesses' special food, some dog treats, her favorite toy, her bed, and her leash."
 
9     "Okay," Jackie replied.
 
10     Jenny then explained all the details of taking care of Princess. Jake just smiled in the background.
 
11     "Princess gets fed twice per day. Only give her about one-half can per feeding. At night, she likes to curl up on her bed. She likes to be near someone, so please put her bed near yours. I play with her for 30 minutes every day. When she needs to go outside, she will dance around by the door. Please keep her on a leash while you are outside, unless you are playing with her. That's about it. I've got to go. Here is our phone number if you need it."
 
12     "Have fun!" Jackie said.
 
13     Princess looked sad as Jenny rode away in her parent's car.
 
14     "It's okay, Princess," Jackie said. "We'll have a great time together!" Jake and Jackie began to play with Princess, chasing her around the yard.
