Carlsbad Caverns
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     In 1898 Jim White, a teenaged cowboy, made a ladder out of wire. He used it to climb down into a cave that had rarely been seen before. He loved the cave and explored it for ten years. Few people believed there was anything worth seeing. One time, deep in the cave, his lamp went out. He spent more than 30 minutes in complete darkness. Finally, a photographer went with White. He took black and white pictures. When people saw them, they were amazed. Almost everyone wanted to see the Big Room, the Bottomless Pit, the Green Lake Room, and the Giant Dome. White's cave in the New Mexico desert was famous!

2     In 1923 the U.S. government sent Robert Holley to see if the reports about the cave were true. As a result of his report, in 1925 Carlsbad Caverns became a national monument. In 1930 Carlsbad Caverns National Park was created to protect the caves. Now it is one of the most visited cave systems in the world.
