George Eastman
By Sharon Fabian

1     There are fashion photographers, sports photographers, news photographers, school portrait photographers, wedding photographers, and amateur photographers. People become photographers for many different reasons. For some people it is their job. For some people it is an art form, and for other people it is a hobby or a way to record family memories. Many families have several members who enjoy taking pictures. People who don't have a camera can buy a disposable one to snap some pictures on their vacation.

2     In the past, photography was not an activity that anyone could do. Only serious photographers who had mastered their trade were able to take a photograph. Before George Eastman's time, anyone who wanted to take pictures had to be good at chemistry. Taking a picture was a complicated process involving chemical changes, and the photographer had to know what he was doing. To take a picture, the photographer had to prepare a heavy glass plate with wet chemicals. A kind of tent was needed to cover his camera and keep out the light. Cameras were cumbersome and heavy, and photography equipment was expensive.

3     George Eastman changed all of that. He found ways to make photography available to the general public. He took the chemistry out of photography, or at least it seemed that way. With George Eastman's inventions, photography became fun.
