Evergreens and conifers
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Every fall, leaves on the trees turn bright colors--yellow, red, brown. By the time it gets cold, all the leaves are gone. But there are some trees that not only stay green, but they also keep their leaves for winter! Those trees are called evergreens because they stay green year-round.

2     There are many kinds of evergreen trees. Some of their leaves are tougher and more leathery than others. Some evergreens have needle-shaped leaves. Needles have fewer surfaces than big flat leaves and can resist changes in temperature and humidity more easily.

3     How do evergreens stay green year-round? In fact, they do lose their leaves. But they are able to grow new leaves before shedding the old ones! Some evergreens keep the same leaves through the winter and into the summer. Some trees are able to keep the same leaves for several years before they drop off!
