¹     Although the Cold War never involved direct battles between the United States and the Soviet Union, the conflict was fought indirectly in a number of smaller countries. In the 1950's, it was fought in Korea. In the 1960's, it was fought in Vietnam.
 
²     In the 1970's, the conflict between the superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, was fought in Afghanistan.
 
³     Afghanistan is a rugged country of steep mountains and flat plains. It is a little smaller than our state of Texas, and is home to about 25 million people. It is located between the Soviet Union and the Arabian Sea.
 
⁴     Afghanistan has frequently been a battleground as a result of foreign invasions. Unrest and civil war have plagued the country at various times throughout its history.
 
⁵     The year 1979 was one of those times. The government had changed hands once again, and the communists, who had been in control of the country, were in danger of losing control. The Soviet Union decided to invade Afghanistan to keep the communists in power.
