Afghanistan
By Sharon Fabian

1     Although the Cold War never involved direct battles between the United States and the Soviet Union, the conflict was fought indirectly in a number of smaller countries. In the 1950's, it was fought in Korea. In the 1960's, it was fought in Vietnam.

2     In the 1970's, the conflict between the superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, was fought in Afghanistan.

3     Afghanistan is a rugged country of steep mountains and flat plains. It is a little smaller than our state of Texas, and is home to about 25 million people. It is located between the Soviet Union and the Arabian Sea.

4     Afghanistan has frequently been a battleground as a result of foreign invasions. Unrest and civil war have plagued the country at various times throughout its history.
