What Does Hispanic Mean?
By Cathy Pearl

1     What does it mean to be Hispanic? Does it mean that everyone speaks Spanish? Do all Hispanics come from the same country? People who are Hispanic share many things. But Hispanic people are not all the same. One thing that is the same is that they share a heritage.

2     People who are Hispanic have a heritage. Their heritage is special to them. They share a language, food, and dances. They also have special traditions. Many of them celebrate Independence Day on September 16. That is the day Mexico started the fight for freedom from Spanish rule. This day is special to people in Mexico. It is like the Fourth of July is special to people in the United States.

3     The word Hispanic was started in the U.S. It helps tie people together. The people come from many different places. Hispanic people do not come from one country. There are more than 20 countries where people are called Hispanic. People who come from Spain may be called Hispanic.
