The Sioux
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1     What would it be like to live on the Great Plains? The sky was wide and open. There were few trees to block it. That is where the Sioux [Soo] lived.

2     The grasslands could feed many kinds of animals. There were deer, antelope, rabbits, and other small animals. The biggest animal of all was the bison.

3     The bison was a big animal. He was also fast and could kill a man. The Sioux needed his meat to live. It tasted good. It could also feed many people.

4     Before horses came, it was hard to hunt bison. Sometimes, the people would try to sneak up on a herd. Then they would shoot. Other times they would try to run the bison off of a cliff.

5     The Sioux did not waste any part of the animals they hunted. They tanned the hides. They used them to make teepees. They were used as blankets or made into clothes. The meat was eaten. They used other parts for tools, toys, and whatever they needed.
