Why Do We Estimate?
By Jane Runyon

It was time for science in Mrs. Kim's class. The children were ready. But were they ready for this?

"Please take out a piece of paper and a pencil," Mrs. Kim instructed. "We are going to have a pop quiz."

"Oh, no," wailed Laura, "I didn't study."

"You don't study for a pop quiz, silly," said Matt. "That's why it's called a pop quiz. It just pops up."

"Here is the first question," began Mrs. Kim. "How many stars are in the sky?"

No one's pencil moved. The students looked surprised.

"Here is the next question," continued Mrs. Kim. "How many grains of sand are on a beach?"

     Still no pencils moved.

"Number three," said Mrs. Kim. "How many people live in our town?"

The students stared at Mrs. Kim. But Mrs. Kim just continued to ask questions.

"How old is Mrs. Johnson, the media teacher? How much is 243 + 738 + 983? How much is 326 x 47?"
