I Want to be in the Olympics - Part 1
By Phyllis Naegeli

Jody rushed through the front door after school. "Mom! Mom!" She called.

"I'm in the office," Mom called back.

Jody ran, breathless, into the office and plopped down in the chair facing Mom's desk.

Mom leaned forward and rested her arms on the desk. "My goodness! This must be really important."

Jody sat up in the chair and took a deep breath. "It is! I've decided I want to be in the Olympics."

Mom leaned back in her chair. "You do?"

Jody jumped up from her chair and handed a piece of paper to Mom. "Yes, I do. Here's a list of the sports. I just need to decide which one I'll be best at."

Mom took the paper and began to look over the list. "Hmm. There are quite a few options here. Which ones interest you the most?"

     "I like all of them."

Mom smiled. "I think you need to narrow it down a bit. Do you know anything about these sports?"

"I know about a few of them. We've started talking about them in social studies today."

"Do you know what it takes to be an Olympic athlete?"

"You have to be good at something."

Mom shook her head in agreement. "That's true. But you also have to be very dedicated. Olympic athletes train for years before they compete. They have to prove they are good enough to be on the team."
