The New Girl
By Kathleen W. Redman

"Mom, there is a new girl in our class," Susie said. "Her name is Kayla, and no one likes her."

     "Why not?" her mother asked.

"She is different. She takes so long to learn things. She doesn't even know how to tie her shoes," Susie said.

"Does Kayla look different?" her mother asked.

"A little bit," Susie said. "I can't say how, but she just seems different.

"The other kids pick on her, too. The teacher said she has a mental handicap. What does that mean?" Susie asked.

"It means that she learns things more slowly," her mother said. "She may take longer to learn how to be a friend. She may have trouble being able to take care of herself."

"She goes to another class sometimes," Susie said.

"Kayla may need help with learning and with solving problems," her mother said.
