Grandpa's Cane
By Kathleen W. Redman

Gabe wanted to get a special gift for Grandpa Terry. Grandpa Terry was very special. He played catch with Gabe. He took Gabe fishing. He taught Gabe to ride a bike. He went on long walks with him. Gabe loved him very much.

It was only two days until Christmas. Gabe did not have any money. He asked his mother what to do.

"If you think very hard, you will think of something," she said.

Gabe thought very hard. How could he get a gift without any money? He thought and thought. He thought very hard. He still could not think of a special gift for Grandpa Terry. He asked his father what to do.

"I am sure you can think of something," he said.

So Gabe thought again. He thought about playing catch. He thought about going fishing. He thought about riding his bike. He thought about long walks with Grandpa Terry. He thought so hard his head hurt!

All of a sudden Gabe knew what to do! He knew what he would give Grandpa Terry. He went into his father's workshop. He went into his mother's sewing room. He went into the closet. And while Grandpa Terry was asleep, he tiptoed into his room. Then Gabe went into his own room. He closed the door very quietly. He did not come out for almost three hours!

The next morning was very cold. There was snow on the ground. The sun was shining.

"I think I will go for a walk," Grandpa Terry said. "Gabe, would you like to go with me?"

     "Oh, yes, Grandpa!" Gabe said.

"Well, where did I leave my cane?" Grandpa Terry asked. "I do not see it."

"I do not see it, either," Gabe's mother said.
