What Is Computer Art?
By Colleen Messina

1     The newest tool in an artist's collection is not a new kind of paintbrush or pencil. It is the computer. Ever since Buzz Lightyear appeared in Toy Story, computer-aided design has made going to movies a whole new experience.

2     Computer art is a broad category that includes advertising, television, and feature films. It is any art created with the aid of a computer. Computer-aided design that creates computer art is called CAD for short. CAD can also design new cars and space shuttles. CAD is also used to make computer games. Computer games used to just have flat, two-dimensional shapes chasing each other across boring backgrounds. Today, computer games have endless imaginary worlds and amazing graphics.

3     In films, computers were first used to create special effects. In 1995, computer artists made Toy Story, the first fully-animated computer film. Buzz Lightyear, Woody, a neurotic dinosaur, and a stodgy pig entranced audiences. The film won special awards, including an Oscar. The film started a wave of computer-animated films. Three years later, Pixar released A Bug's Life, another hit. Buzz Lightyear's famous motto, "to infinity and beyond" could easily apply to how CAD has changed the movie industry.
