¹     Jo lived on a farm. She had a pet duck named Sally. Sally was not a white duck. She was spotted. She was black and white with a red face.
 
²     Some people said Sally was ugly. Jo knew better. Sally was her friend. Jo and Sally had fun.
 
³     One day, Jo went to see Sally. Sally was not under the tree. She was not with the other ducks. Where could she be?
 
⁴     Jo went to the pond. Sally was not there. Where could she be? Jo ran to the house.
 
⁵     "Mom," she said, "Sally is gone."
 
⁶     Mom looked out the window. "I see Sally. She is under the tree with the other ducks."
 
⁷     Jo looked too. There was Sally. Where had Sally been?
 
⁸     The next day, Sally was gone again. Jo looked all over. She could not find Sally. She went to see Mom.
 
⁹     "Mom, I cannot find Sally," said Jo.
