Wendy's World- The Irish
By Jane Runyon

Wendy's parents went to a movie one night. They went with Tim and Tess's parents. They asked Megan O'Conner to stay with the children. Megan was in high school. She played on the high school soccer team.

"Do you like playing soccer?" asked Tess.

"Yes, it is a lot of fun," answered Megan.

"What is your team called?" asked Tim.

"We are the Irish!" answered Megan.

"The Irish!" exclaimed Tim. "Why aren't you called Tigers, or Bulldogs, or Eagles?"

"Yes," said Wendy, "I thought teams took the names of strong scary animals."

"Some teams take names like that," said Megan. "But many teams take the name of something special in their community."

"Are Irish special to this community?" asked Tess.

"What are Irish, anyway," asked Tim.

"Irish is the name given to people from Ireland," answered Megan. "And yes, they are special to our community."

"Please tell us how," said Wendy. "I'd like to know."

"Well," started Megan, "this town was started by people who fled Ireland."
