Russian Winter Olympic History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     For many people, family is the most important part of their lives. For others, religion is most important. For some, even a job or career is most important. What is most important in your life? You can probably think of many things that you value most, maybe your family and friends, and maybe even a dream. That's part of the story of one Russian athlete who had to make a choice. Irina Slutskaya once had to choose between her sport and her family.

2     Russia is the largest country in the world by size. It stretches from Eastern Europe all the way across Asia. To many people, Russia means two things: cold weather and incredible winter athletes. While it's only partly true that Russia is cold (summer can be pretty hot in most Russian cities), its winter athletes are among the best in the world.

3     From 1956 on, Russian athletes have won hundreds of Winter Olympic medals. Its hockey team was unbeatable for many decades. In fact, it lost only six games in almost 40 years. Russia's cross-country skiers are some of the most-decorated in the world. But nowhere else does Russian sportsmanship shine like it does on the figure skating rink.
