Running with Fire
By Jody Williams

1     Could you run a long way carrying fire? That is what the Torch Relay runners do. On November 27, 2005, the Olympic torch was lit. The fire was made by using the sun and a mirror. The torch is made of wood and metal. Runners will carry the lit torch all over the world. They will start in Greece. That is where the first Olympics were held.

2     The first person to carry the torch was Costas Filippidis. He is a pole vaulter from Greece. He is only 19 years old. By the time the relay is done, 10,000 people will have carried the torch. No one knows who the last person will be. It will be a very special athlete. That person will light the Olympic flame. When that happens, the Olympic Winter Games will begin!
