1     While on a cross-country training ski run, Alvin had found the trail of an injured deer. He'd done the only humane thing he could do. Alvin didn't doubt that the local coyotes or wolves would find what remained of the carcass and rejoice in their good fortune.
 
2     When he reached home, Alvin put his equipment away.
 
3     "Do you have a minute, Dad?" Alvin asked his father.
 
4     "Sure, Al, did your training run go well this afternoon?"
