1     "Ponga su John Hancock aquí". Esta expresión muy conocida simboliza la necesidad de colocar nuestra firma en un documento. John Hancock es conocido principalmente por su gran firma excasivamente adornada en la Declaración de la Independencia. Pero, ¿quién es el hombre detrás de esa famosa firma?
 
2     John Hancock nació el 12 de enero de 1737 en Braintree, Massachusetts. Su padre, clérigo, murió cuando John era un niño. Su madre no podía criarlo y John fue adoptado por su acaudalado tío, Thomas Hancock, un comerciante exitoso.
 
3     Thomas Hancock quería que John tuviese la mejor educación posible y lo envió a Harvard. En 1754, a los 17 años, John se graduó con un título en negocios y fue a trabajar para su tío. Durante un tiempo, vivió en Inglaterra y manejó los asuntos comerciales de su tío allí. En 1764, su tío murió. John Hancock heredó tanto el negocio como una gran riqueza. Ahora era el hombre más rico de Nueva Inglaterra.
