1     W.E.B. DuBois fue un erudito. Pasó gran parte de su vida estudiando para títulos universitarios avanzados, aprendiendo materias tan diversas como sociología y latín y griego, pero no dedicó todo su tiempo a estudiar y pensar. También expresó en palabras sus propias ideas. Escribió y dio conferencias para que todas las personas posibles pudieran entender las cosas como las entendía él.
 
2     A W.E.B. le interesaba mucho aprender sobre la gente de su raza: los afroamericanos. Creía que si aprendía todo lo que podía, encontraría formas para que los negros obtuvieran sus derechos y mejoraran sus vidas.
 
3     Comenzó sus estudios a muy temprana edad. Ya en la escuela secundaria W.E.B. fue un alumno excelente. Era brillante y lograba incluso más que lo que sus maestros le exigían. Se convirtió en el corresponsal local de un periódico de Nueva York y escribió artículos en los que alentaba a los negros a actuar en política. Se graduó entre los mejores estudiantes, aquellos que tenían la esperanza de ir a universidades como Harvard.
